The Beauty of Bondage

When it comes to games in the bedroom, bondage has a really dark reputation in some circles, yet those that dismiss bondage as deviant sexual behaviour miss out on some of the joys of power games that can really make a big difference in keeping your sex life with your partner spicy.

One of the key things to remember about bondage is that even if you are just tying your partner's hands together, there needs to be a safe word. Safe words are key to respecting your partner's boundaries and making sure that you both enjoy the experimentation. A safe word should be something that you have both agreed upon, if you aren't sure what a safe word is or the best time to use it, check out our blog on safe words.

Isn't bondage just about whips and chains?

No, bondage is a lot more than whips and chains and it doesn't have to include either of them. Bondage is more about restraining one partner in some way as part of your sex games. This can be done with a range of different restraints and used either as the focal point of the sex games or as part of a more elaborate role playing game.

What kind of restraints are there?
There a number of different types of restraints. The restraints that you will come across more often than not are handcuffs. The lower end of the sex restraint toys tend to be plastic cuffs lined with faux fur. They're fun and easy to use, but if you are looking to experiment with more than just handcuffing your partner as part of their police fantasy, then you may need something more robust. Restraints that are available include ankle separators, harnesses to hog tie your partner with, silk restraints, leather cuffs and elaborate sex swings and frames. You can restrain parts of your partner or all of them – all that limits you is how far you are both willing to go.

How easy is it to get out of restraints?
Most restraints are fitted with quick release systems, however the more complicated the restraints are, the longer it can take to get out of them. Handcuffs and ribbons are the easiest to get off in a hurry, so if you are nervous about bondage and want to be sure you can get out of the restraints quickly, then these two are your best bet. Ribbons are much easier than handcuffs as there are a number of knots you can use that will allow a quick escape and if all else fails, you can use scissors to cut yourself free.

It shouldn't take longer to get out of the restraints as it does to be put in them on the whole, though sex swings can be the exception to this.

What kind of different bondage scenarios are there?
Bondage scenarios are only limited by the imagination, we've already touched on one handcuff scenario, but there are many more. Rather than focusing on the types of scenario, here are a few different ways that you can include bondage in your sex games – these range from the tame to the much more adventurous.

Tying up
Tying up or handcuffing is the tamest type of bondage out there. It simply means that you or your partner has their hands tied, either in front or behind and you use it as part of the foreplay or as part of the sexual fantasy you are engaging in.

Hog tying
Hog tying is something that is more advanced than tying up. It involves one partner having their wrists and ankles all tied together behind them. Generally they are face down on the floor, bed or table with their wrists and ankles tied together in the air. This allows the other partner complete control over the other one, even to the extent that they can leave their partner tied up and go do other things and the partner can only lie their, wait and beg.

To the headboard
Tying to the headboard, or being handcuffed to one is a fairly common fantasy but it is by no means any less sex for it. Hands can be tied either together to a central point of the bed or to opposite bed posts. Ankles can also be tied to create a sense of greater control.

To a chair
Like being tied to a head board, being tied or handcuffed to a chair is a common fantasy. This one works particularly well for men when a striptease or lap dance is being used as part of the foreplay – they can look, but they can't touch or engage in sex until you let them.

From the ceiling
You may have heard of sex swings, but never seen one. Well sex swings can be elaborate pieces of engineering that suspend one partner completely off the ground in very vulnerable positions. The partner being suspended is restrained in the sex swing making it something that should only be attempted by those with safe words and who are completely comfortable with bondage.

Are all restraints expensive?
Restraints are expensive as you are willing to make them. Restraints can be anything from a ribbon that you have in the drawer to the top shelf leather and chain combinations, just remember that as with any sex toy, you do get what you pay for. You may want to go with a cheaper restraint toy, but it may not be able to keep up with the rigours of your bondage sex games.

How can bondage improve my sex life?
Bondage brings an element of excitement to sex. One partner is vulnerable to the other one and it can be an extremely erotic experience, especially if you haven't done that much experimenting before. Tying your partner's hands and making them kneel on the floor whilst seducing them, making them wait for sex is a wonderful way to build anticipation and experience the release that comes of being finally allowed to have sex after waiting for so long.
